week 5-1

Over the last week I have been trying out different techniques to figure out the best way to make the ring plates and bowls. I have learned that a little black goes a long way in the initial melt of the design. I have also learned to keep the kiln at the top temp. for 20 more minutes to smooth out the marks made from the grinder. Really like the direction these are going and hope to have some up on my site soon!

week 4-2

Since my little guy has been sick the last few days I have not been able to use the torch as much, so I wanted to post a fused project I have been working on this week. This bowl was created by melting scrap glass in a terracotta flower pot in my large kiln. Once melted and cooled, the design that emerges is always different and varies according to the amount of glass and colors used. I then added a border of amber glass to round out the edges of the bowl. Fire-polishing and slumping the piece are the final steps in creating this bowl. I have already sold a few of these and have a lot of interest in future color combinations. Plates with warm colors are currently available and I will be creating a cool color combination in the next week. Look under "other glass" for a better picture.

Yesterday, I made a flower boro marble. This torch makes it much easier to make implosions-better flame control and melts glass at a higher temp. The one problem I encountered was the temp. of the marble. When I was finished and used the claw-grabbers (forget name of tool), the marble was still too hot and they made little indentions on the surface of the marble. Next time, wait longer...
